Duct Leakage Testing | Title 24 ECC Verification | Northern

Temporary ventilation setup in a hallway with ducting and a fan.

Duct Leakage Testing for Title 24 Compliance

Elite Duct Testing provides independent third-party duct leakage testing and Title 24 Energy Code Compliance (ECC) field verification for residential and multifamily projects across Northern California, including the Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, and Modesto regions.

We work with homeowners, HVAC contractors, builders, and developers to help document required duct-system compliance for HVAC installations, duct replacements, additions, ADUs, and new construction.

What Is Duct Leakage Testing?

Duct leakage testing measures how much air escapes from a forced-air duct system. The system is sealed at the registers and tested with calibrated equipment to identify and measure leakage.

When required by the approved Title 24 compliance documents, the results are used for Energy Code Compliance field verification and project documentation.

When Is Duct Leakage Testing Required?

Testing requirements depend on the project scope and the approved Title 24 documents. Duct leakage testing may be required for:

  • Completely new or replacement duct systems
  • HVAC equipment replacements or alterations that trigger duct sealing verification
  • ADUs and additions with ducted HVAC systems
  • New construction
  • Altered or extended duct systems
  • Residential and multifamily projects with required ECC field verification

Before scheduling, send your approved Title 24 documents, permit information, and project scope so we can help identify the applicable verification measure.

What Happens During the Test?

  1. We review the project scope and required compliance documents.
  2. Registers and openings are sealed and prepared for testing.
  3. A calibrated duct-testing system measures duct leakage.
  4. Results are documented for the applicable ECC compliance process.
  5. If corrections are needed, we communicate the findings clearly so the contractor can address accessible issues before retesting.

Smoke-Test and Visual Verification

A smoke test is not a substitute for standard duct leakage testing on every project. It may be allowed only under specific Energy Code exceptions, typically after accessible leaks have been sealed and when the applicable measured-leakage requirement cannot be met. Eligibility depends on the project and must be verified through the required ECC process.

Schedule at the Right Time

For the smoothest process, schedule duct testing after the duct system is complete and accessible, and coordinate the timing with the HVAC contractor and final-inspection schedule. Equipment and system conditions needed for verification can vary by project.

Service Area

Elite Duct Testing serves Northern California, including the Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, Modesto, Lodi, Stockton, and surrounding communities.

Duct Leakage Testing Questions

Do I need a duct leakage test?

Check the approved Title 24 compliance documents and permit requirements. Send us the documents and project scope before scheduling.

What happens if the system does not pass?

Accessible duct leaks may need to be sealed, followed by retesting or any applicable verification procedure.
