Mechanical Acceptance Testing Process

1. Scope of Work

Before testing begins, we review the project's approved Energy Code documentation NRCC to determine which mechanical acceptance tests are required.

2. Coordinate With the HVAC Contractor

Acceptance testing is performed after the applicable HVAC systems have been installed and are ready for functional testing.

We coordinate with the contractor to make sure the equipment is operational and the necessary documentation, drawings, controls, and system access are available.

3. Perform the Required Field Testing

Technician performs the applicable acceptance tests using the procedures established by California's Energy Code.

Depending on the project, testing may include:

  • Outdoor air and ventilation
  • HVAC equipment operation
  • Air distribution and duct leakage
  • Economizer controls
  • Dedicated outdoor air systems
  • Heat recovery ventilators and energy recovery ventilators
  • Demand control ventilation
  • Supply fan variable-flow controls
  • Hydronic system controls
  • Supply-air temperature reset
  • Automatic demand-shed controls
  • Fault detection and diagnostics
  • Other applicable mechanical systems and controls

4. Document the Results

The results of each applicable acceptance test are documented on the appropriate Certificate of Acceptance (NRCA) form.

For applicable mechanical acceptance tests, the NRCA forms are completed through an approved Acceptance Test Technician Certification Provider (ATTCP) system.

5. FInal Inspection Packet

Once testing is successfully completed, the applicable Certificate(s) of Acceptance are provided for inclusion with the project's Energy Code compliance documentation and submission to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

What Does Acceptance Testing Accomplish?

When Should Acceptance Testing Be Scheduled?

Acceptance testing should be scheduled when the applicable HVAC systems are substantially complete and operational, but while the project team still has access to the equipment, controls, and systems needed for testing.

Scheduling testing early enough to allow corrections and retesting can help prevent delays during the final inspection process.

Our goal is simple: perform the required testing, document the results accurately, and help keep your project moving toward Energy Code compliance.
